Our beautiful store and studio on busy Germantown Avenue offers a wide variety of items for the string afficonado, musician and listener, alike. Besides Elizabeth Vander Veer Shaak’s custom-made bows, the store sells the Delaware Valley’s best selection of modern bows for the violin, viola, cello and bass made by some of the premier craftspeople in the United States, Germany, France, China and Brazil. Violins are also for sale -- full-size and three-quarter size -- for the beginner and serious student.

Silver mounted round stick stamped “A. Lamy A Paris”. A beautiful early example
of Lamy

W. E. Hills & Sons [59.6 gm]
A beautiful early example by W. Lessun in gold and tortoiseshell,
the gold button with pearl facets. The octagonal bow is a lyrical and great playing stick.

Eugene Cuniot [60.0 gm]
Silver mounted round stick stamped “Cuniot-Hury”. A beautiful French bow from the 1880s
.

Otto Hoyer [60.8 gm]
Silver mounted round bow by the sought-after German bowmaker stamped
“ OTTO A HOYER. PARISER.”

An Interesting Bow in the style of LaFleur [61.0]
A stick of unknown origin of dark chocolate brown pernambuco and a swan
head design. The ebony frog is mounted with engraved gold fittings. The later
button is silver mounted.

Occasionally available, I love to carry this maker’s work. His bows are strong and supple
with a deep and colorful sound.

Andre Chardon mid 1900s [78.8gm]
A contempory of E.A. Ouchard who was known for his excellent stock of wood,
which his grandfather, Georges Chanot, had purchased in the 1870s.

Charles Alfred Bazin c. 1950-70s [80.7gm]
The third in the line of Bazin bowmakers, he took over from his father, Louis Bazin, in 1952.
Always used very good wood.

“John & Arthur Beare” c. 1880s [79.9gm]
possibly by C.N. Bazin. A chocolate brown stick and a beautiful player.

Marcel LaPierre c. 1930s [80.0gm]
Worked with Thibouville-Lamy, F. Lotte, L. Bazin, and the Morizots in Mirecourt, France
and for Vidoudez in Switzerland before setting up on his own in Paris. Influences
from Francois Lotte are evident in this example.

W. E. Hills & Sons [61.6 gm]
An octagonal bow by Malcolm Taylor with chased-gold mountings, the button with ebony facets.

This silver-mounted ebony cello bow has a great penetrating sound and steady control.
Was noted as a best sounding bow in bow trials held in New York.

William Salchow 1969 [84.5gm]
The father of the American school of bowmaking. This example is from an outstanding
period in his making, which exemplifies his approach to creating a very strong bow.

William D. Halsey #1 2003 [79.9gm]
A sensitive and exacting maker whose bows are strong and responsive.

A sensitive and exacting maker whose bows are strong and responsive.

John Aniano [76.8 gm]
Worked with Yung Chin of New York. This silver mounted, octagonal, dark brown stick
is a Dodd copy.

An exacting technician who is known for his excellent choice of wood and reasonable prices.

David Russell Young 1990s [79.4gm]
An interesting bow with ivory frog and button.

No, I don’t have one of Sue Lipkin’s bass bows for sale. Neither does anyone else.
The only way to get one of her gorgeous and fabulous playing bows is by getting on her wait list
